Turkey Shipbuilding Summit, 2011

The Turkish shipbuilding industry experienced a rapid growth in exports during the first quarter of 2011.To further speed things up; the country is adopting a barter trade system to achieve the 2023 target of $10 billion in exports. With strong government support, the Turkish shipbuilding industry is looking to have a 20% increase in exports each year for the coming 10 years.

The first Turkey Shipbuilding Summit took place on the 24th and 25th of November in Istanbul, Turkey with over 80 attendees from various shipbuilding companies, associations and shipyards. They all came together to discuss the current trends, investment opportunities and new advanced technologies.

While there were a number of outstanding speakers at the event, the Chairman of the summit, Mr. Osman Kolay from the Chamber of Turkish Naval Architects and Marine Engineers particularly stood out. Not only was he a brilliant Chairman, ensuring the smooth running of the summit, but he also gave a superb presentation. His long experience in this industry makes him a well-respected figure and the delegates listened intently to his comments and evaluation. His extensive knowledge and management skill shaped up the event from the very beginning until the end.

Another notable speaker was Mr. Ertug Yasar, CEO of ADIK Shipyard; his presentation dealt with shipbuilding for the Turkish Navy. As this topic was one that the delegates were not extremely familiar with, they found it to be interesting and extremely informative. Mr. Yasar also went on to outline the current situation of the market and the future expectations of the niche market. His delivery skills were excellent as he gave an interactive presentation, which kept the audience active and allowed them to give solid feedback. This presentation received a lot of attention and the delegates were highly impressed by Mr. Yasar. A similar presentation, which also received a great amount of interest, was one given by Mr. Vidar Smines, General Manager of Istanbil Ulstein Design. He spoke in regards to innovative shop design, a topic highly relevant to all attending delegates. He spoke about his company’s simplistic approach to design and efficiency, this attracted a lot of attention from the delegates and they proceeded to ask him a number of questions. Mr. Vidar Smines presentation was well received and he presented his topic highly professionally with the help of a number of visual aids.

An interesting Skype presentation came courtesy of EMEC `s General Secretary (European Marine Equipment Council) Paola Lancellotti. He spoke on the changing role of the marine equipment industry by fining the human factor: `Homo Technicus` (Technology, environment and complexity) which is affecting the green growth and the sustainability. He also stressed on the importance of cooperation between ship equipment suppliers, classification companies and the shipyards

The summit also provided a platform for new introductions and innovations in the shipping sector to be presented, Ulsteins X Bow Design was the hit innovation presented during the event. The new X-Bow design means it is possible to reduce bow impact forces and slamming, the waves gently deflect around the hull. Therefore absorbing less energy and minimizing speed loss and enhancing fuel efficiency. No spray and green seas, offering better cargo protection and safer deck operations.
