2nd Annual Wind Summit Turkey 2011

The rapid economic growth in Turkey has resulted in a growing need for electricity. With Turkey set to become Europe’s third biggest electricity market in 2030, the potential for wind power in Turkey, together with the government reshaping its energy policies to ensure safe and reliable energy production, from renewable energy creates perfect conditions for investment.

Supported by Eurosolar Turkey, Noppen's 2nd Annual Wind Summit Turkey took place on the 8th and 9th of December 2011 in the Elite World hotel, Istanbul, Turkey. Over 130 senior government officials, directors, industry experts, wind energy investors, and project developers from across Turkey and abroad attended the summit. Day one of the conference began with an opening speech from the conference Chairman, Yalcin Argon, Vice President of Eurosolar, warmly welcoming all the attendees to the summit and Istanbul. Hulusi Kara, President for Electricity Market Licensing for EPDK, who gave information about the evolution of EPDK for licensing, then followed him. In addition to this, he also gave the delegates the latest updates for licensing and feed tariff in Turkey.

Key speaker, Zeki Eris, Chief Executive Officer, Polat Energy presented on the morning of day one in regards to key growth and investment opportunities within the Turkish wind power sector. The presentation gave a clear view about the investment potential in Turkey for wind power and suggestions for new applications. Selim Güven, Energy Trading and Strategic Planning Director for Akenerji who spoke in regards to the Efet agreement was the next speaker. His company, AkEnerji is the first one in Turkey who applied the Eget Agreement for renewable energy. His speech was highly enjoyed by all the attendees and they listened intently as he explained the importance of the contract and the possibility of the agreement adjustments. The attendees were very curious and asked him a number of questions after his presentation which lasted ten minutes after his speech. “Well organized and fully informative! “Eurosolar Turkey

After Mr. Güven, the Energy Coordinator for Wind, Solar and Hydro Projects for Eksim Investment, Ruçhan Hamamci spoke about the tender figures in wind energy&investment risk with recent tender rates. He gave examples of the projects that the company lost by high tender rates as well as an overview of the Turkish wind market based on tender figures.

In the afternoon, Kor Ozay the Deputy Executive Director Ağaoğlu Energy Group informed the attendees of the dynamics and challenges faced by wind developers in Turkey. He mentioned that the demand for renewable energy has increased despite the setbacks in Turkey; 2011 saw a 9% increase in renweable energy and that number is set to rise in the coming years. His presentation was highly enoyed by the attendees as was Erol Demirer’s , the owner Demirer Holding. He spoke on the benefits of manufacturing in Turkey, possibilities and challenges and gave support to the fact that Turkey is a good local market. Furthermore, he also actively featured in the panel discussion of day one. There were a number of questions for him in the panel about manufacturing. It became apparent that his opinion really matters and that’s he has a real influence on the market. “An excellent opportunity for networking and gathering marketing insights. Day two of the conference was also full of excellent speakers including Luis Adao Da Fonseca, Chief Business Development Officer and Member of EDP Renovaveis. He gave a a presentation about European wind farm objectives & performances of European wind farms. The public warmly welcomed his presentation as he spoke on the energy assessment problem and wrong returns in fast growing countries. Another welcomed speaker was Mete Maltepe, the General Manager of GE Energy (Turkey) who presented an interesting case study based upon the renewables at GE and integration with natural gas. He spoke about a new standard of integration of more renewable energy resources onto the power grid and his speech enlightened the attendees as he presented it from a different angle.
Furthermore, Bruno Denis, Head of the Turkish Division for EIB spoke in regards to energy financing solutions for Turkey. The attendees paid attention carefully to what he had to say in regards to the loaning systems for Turkey and the importance of projects criteria. The attendees were eager to find out more on this topic and asked him many questions after his presentation. “Well organized and interesting topics! “ Demirer Holding

The conference also provided a platform for new innovations to be introduced; a particular standout one came from Arda Alisbah, the General Manager of Turkey Acciona. He introduced Acciona’s wind power product and sustainability lines for wind sites in Turkey and the Turkish market. This included the AW 1500 and AW3000 and Mr. Alisbah went on to explain in detail the performance, safety and reliability.
