South East Asia Airport Expansion Summit

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIET NAM, 6-7 SEPTEMBER 2012 – Asia is vastly expanding their airport infrastructure to ensure that business and leisure tourists can easily commute. Asia has been the location of the best airports in the world and continues this trend. The Asian region is forecast as the fastest growing aviation market over the next twenty years. By 2025 Asian airports are expected to handle more than three times the volume of movements handled in 2005, with growth averaging 6 percent per annum.

Supported by The Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam in conjunction with Airports Corporation of Viet Nam (ACV), the South East Asia Airport Expansion Summit 2012 took place on the 6-7 September 2012 in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. With over 120 attendees, the event featured the most prominent industry leaders and government officials from across the globe who provided informative and inspiring discussions, tackled the best solutions to problems addressing airports with top experts and divulged new strategies and technologies that can be taken away and applied to individual airports across South East Asia.

The growth of aviation in the Southeast Asia region has resulted in a wide range of current or planned investments in all sectors of the industry by governments, airlines and other aviation companies. “The future for Vietnamese aviation is bright. By 2014, Vietnam is projected to be the world’s 3rd fastest growing market for international passengers and freight, and the 2nd fastest for domestic passengers. But it is a future that cannot be taken for granted. Vietnamese aviation must be built and supported by sound policies that take into account that this is a dynamic industry where change is the only constant.”

Mr. Nguyen Lam Cuong was the Chairman of the conference on day one. He is the Deputy General Director of Vietnam National Construction Consultants Corporation (VNCC), a state-owned single member company limited under Ministry of Construction established in the form of Parent-subsidiary model. Currently VNCC is the holding company with 9 member companies. VNCC presently has a source of experienced architects and engineers with high professional qualification, experiences in working with foreign clients and contractors. Then he introduced the first speaker Mr. Nguyen Duong, Deputy Director, Planning & Investment Department – Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) – he’s taking the responsibility to monitor and direct planning and investment activities in the aviation field of Viet Nam. He gave a keynote speech on the overview of Vietnam Aviation Sector and current development of Vietnam airports also share the opportunities and challenges of airports expansion.

Mr. Richard Fulton, Director of Business Development – Aviation, Tyco Security Products gave a key speech on Security and Beyond – Security Systems to increase an Airports Operational Efficiency. He took this opportunity to give a very detailed introduction to the security systems and its uses in Vietnam airports.

Mr. Vinoop Goel, Assistant Director, Member & Government Relations, International Air Transport Association (IATA) captivated the audience with an intuitive look at Airport Development in South East Asia. The delegates got to learn about the ambitious airport development projects across South East Asia in the coming years. Citing recent experiences with companies both in and out of the airport industry, Mr. Tran Song Hai General Director of DP Consulting Co., Ltd gave the informative introduction about his company service and illustrated how customers often remember the customer service they offered while emphasizing other items on which companies often focus.

Mr. Jeff Scheferman, CEO of ADC & HAS Worldwide took to the stage to discuss the Global Models for Funding Development, Operation and Ownership of Airports. Highlighting the challenges of industry leaders in funding, Mr. Jeff Scheferman urged industry leaders to focus strongly on the value of operation service. Providing a historical viewpoint of how the airline industry has changed from the days of government regulation to today’s unregulated market, this insightful examination offered an understanding of where the airline industry is today and where it could possibly be headed in the future. In addition, Mr. Foley discussed the overall economic impact of air travel in today’s ever-changing economy.

Mr. Liang Hian Ching has well over 40 years experience in the design, construction and management of building, airport and infrastructure projects. He has also held positions as Project Engineer for large highway projects, Head of Road Design Section PWD, (HQ) and lastly as Deputy Director of Structure and Special Work Division (HQ). He presented about Successful Airport Expansion Projects. With another perspective of this topic, Dr. Shafie Karimin, Vice President/Executive Director, Kuala Lumpur International Airport Consultancy Services (KLIAS) was not hesitate to share one of the most detail-driven presentations at the event about some emerging projects he has worked so far.

There were many technology updates revealed at the event and especially Mr. Peter Farmer, Director of 3DReid. Providing a historical viewpoint of how the airline industry has changed from the days of government regulation to today’s unregulated market, this insightful examination offered an understanding of where the airline industry is today and where it could possibly be headed in the future with topic “Sustainable Airports”.

An in-depth discussion of Identifying and Managing Threats in Airports were lead by our moderator Mr. Nguyen Phu Hai, CEO of Airport Engineering Consultancy with participation of Mr. Richard Fulton, Mr. Vinoop Goel and Mr. Liang Hian Ching. The session, which gained the attention of many attendees, received high reviews and sparked discussion of how helpful to the current airport operations.

On day two, Mr.Nguyen Phu Hai from the day one’s discussion panel was the Chairman with over 25 years of airport engineering experience and leads AEC since 1994. AEC was established in 1985 as the first airport design organization in Vietnam, since 1994 become a state owned company and since 2006 equitized, become a joint stock company (42.5% of Vietnam Airlines Corporation and 57.5% of private sector). Mr. Nguyen Phu Hai is highly experienced in planning, designing, analyzing, reporting key findings, and together with AEC offering consultancy service to several aviation and airport projects.

Mr. Niranjan Simha, Project Director & Head Airport Business Unit, Larsen & Toubro Limited- B&F (IC) Mumbai International Airport Projects started the presentation about Airports in India on EPC basis. He is Airports Business Unit Head, Responsible for the Development of Airport Business in the organization, with a strategic plan to make this particular business unit to achieve a target of 2 billion USD turn over in the next four years.

Other notable speakers included Mr. Alex Ngian, General Manager, Philips Electronics Vietnam shared Giving the Airports Green Lights and Mr. Alexander Wendler, Managing Director, Macquarie Capital who presented on Private Sector Involvement in Ownership, Operation and Financing of Airports.

Another experienced speaker - Mr. Frank Erb, Aviation Director, Serco who gave an introduction to the Serco – Enabling the Airport Industry to Grow and how Serco could help airports run safer, more intelligently and more energy efficiently. In addition, Mr. Reinhard Zeiler, Senior ORAT Advisor, Munich Airport Company raised the interesting topic “Is an ORAT Project Necessary for the Successful Implementation of a New Airport Facility?”

The most anticipated presentation at the conference was by Mr. Vu Hoang Long, Deputy President, Hoang Gia International Joint Stock Company. He presented an excellent introduction to the relationship between airports and investors on Northern Quang Ninh International Airport Project and gave opportunities how to improve cooperation in order to deliver better airport construction.

Continuing his expert skills as moderator, Mr. Nguyen Phu Hai brought the exciting atmosphere to the end session of day two. Mr. G. Johar, Segment Head Airports (International), Larsen & Toubro Limited; Mr. Reinhard Zeiler, Senior ORAT Advisor, Munich Airport Company and Mr. Peter Farmer, Director, 3DReid as panelists led all in attendance through a diverse and very informative panel discussion of Effective Design of Airside and Landside Infrastructures.
