India Data Center Infratech Conference, 2012

Noppen (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., in partnership with NASSCOM hosted the India Data CenterInfratech Conference in Mumbai, in the last week of September. The conference brought together, leading Data Center Technology Providers, Third Party Data Center Operators and some of the leading enterprises and banks to deliberate on the Data Center landscape, Issues and challenges and new data Center technologies.

Data centers, which initially made their major appearance in India in mid 1990s, have matured into core business enablers.

The chairman for Day 1 of the conference, Ms. ShaheenMeeran, MD, Schnabel DC consultants, India welcomed the delegates to the conference and spoke briefly about the theme of the overall theme of the conference. She introduced the first speaker of the day, Ms. Rama Vedashree, VP, NASSCOM. Her presentation dealt with the global trends in the Data Center Market, the developments of the overall State Data Center strategy under the NeGP, and how these facilities were becoming truly state-of-the-art. She also spoke about the contribution of NASSCOM and its members in the India Data Center Industry. She ended her presentation with a note about how the Government of India is poised to be one of the largest vertical driving growth through implementations of State Data Centers. Currently there are 17 fully operational SDCs with 8 more under implementation.

Speaking on Strategies for the Data Center Environment, Ms. SeethaSasikala, Marketing Leader Ingersoll Rand and Mr. Rajesh Sikka, Country Leader India, Trane, Ingersoll Rand presented a two part presentation. The first part of the presentation dealt with the Impact of cooling on Data Centers. They spoke about global challenges faced by Data Centers regards to availability, efficiency and sustainability of cooling systems, performance benchmarks to measure energy efficiency, and management concerns, including the need for adequate monitoring and managing the data Center in an energy efficient manner. They also presented some solutions to the concerns, including addressing downtime risks, adjusting coolers to new server technologies, use of economizers to minimize cooling, or dehumidification, which has led to improvements of 20% to 30%. They ended their presentation by presenting case studies showcasing the improvement in energy efficiency after implementing the above.

Continuing on the theme of sustainability of DataCenters, Mr. C R Srinivasan, VP, Global Product Management, Data Center Services, Tata Communications Ltd covered Aspects of Data Center sustainability and scalability, How to manage and operate a data Center, Best practices to be followed in the operational space. He shared the five tenets of ensuring sustainable operations, bringing to light the need for robust operating procedures and skilled manpower. He also spoke about the rules for sustainability, including standardization of infrastructure, adherence to standard operating procedures, maintenance of operational hygiene, and the use of intelligent automation. His presentation was well received by the attending delegates.

The Chairperson for Day 1, Ms. ShaheenMeeran, then spoke about The Concept of Green Data Center and its development in India.She shared the model of a green data center, spoke about what goes into creating a green data center, the main parameters to be kept in mind when developing a green data center including proper Site Selection, Innovation, Measurement and Certification. She ended her presentation by speaking about some disparate initiatives in India and the need for companies to have a road map when implementing green technology for Data Centers. She recommended the adoption of the Environment Performance Criteria for Data Centers as a first in India.

Continuing on the theme of environmental consciousness in Data Centers, Mr. Jayabalan Subramanian – CTO & Co-founder, NetmagicSolutions covered the Best Practices of Netmagic’s Gold LEED certified Data Center Facility at Chennai. This session dealt with the consumption and environmental impacts of DCs, Drivers and trends impacting the industry, an introduction to USGBC LEED certification and their different levels and Netmagic’s journey towards acquiring the certification. He also spoke about some of the benefits received by the LEED certification including lower operating costs, increased asset value, healthier building for occupants and other incentives including tax rebates and zoning allowances.

Speaking about Data Center Optimization, Mr. SreejithGopalakrishnapillai, Head of Data Center Operations and Product Management, Sify Technologies Ltd covered current operational challenges, cost analysis and solutions to optimize efficiency. He also spoke about the benefits of cooling optimization, virtualization and infrastructure monitoring.

Day one concluded with a panel discussion on Challenges and Opportunities in Building Green Data Centers in India, moderated by Ms. ShaheenMeeran and consisted of Mr. SreejithGopalakrishnan, Mr. Jayabalan Subramanian and Mr. Rajesh Sikka. The discussion was very interactive and concluded with a lively Q&A session with the audience.

The first speaker on Day 2, Mr. KunalPande, Partner-KPMG India gave an overview on Cloud Computing in India. He briefly spoke about the evolution of computing from the initial stage to its current stage of virtual societies leading a change in business performance factors. His session also touched upon the benefits of Cloud, Cloud as a business game changer, and the increasing adoption of cloud in India.

Speaking about the Relevance of Cloud for India, Mr. RanganathanRamani-VP, IT Infrastructure, Vodafone India Ltd gave an informative presentation, covering the current Data Center Scenario in India, Challenges in Building and Sustaining a Data Center, Energy concerns, a roadmap to cloud, opportunities for cloud computing in SMB, Healthcare and Education verticals and the challenges faced in incorporating cloud as a solution.

Speaking about how Cloud Computing would impact Data Centers, Mr. Nitin Mishra-VP, Product Management, Netmagic Solutions,covered IT and Data Center Trends, challenges faced by a CIO, Traditional IT Ecosystems versus cloud Ecosystems, the benefits of using cloud computing, the challenges that would arise, the impact of cloud on data centers and future trends in the sphere. His presentation also covered challenges that could be addressed using Cloud Computing.

This session was followed by an interactive panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni, Management Consulting, KPMG India, with Mr. Nitin Mishra, Mr. RanganathanRamani, and Mr. Ashok Singh, Chief Manager of Data Center, Bank of Maharashtra taking part in the discussion. The discussion centered on how Cloud Computing would impact virtualized data centers, storage and Enterprise security.

Keeping with the theme of Data Center Security, Mr. Sameer J Ratolikar-Chief Information Security Officer, Bank of India spoke about Security Information and Management trends, major security threats that can affect a Data Center, taking examples from the Banking sector and listing out the steps to be followed. This was a relevant topic for the gathered delegates and was well received.

Other notable speakers at the event included Mr. Robin Roy of Delta Power Solutions (India) Pvt. Ltd and Mr. Ashok Singh, Chief Manager, Data Center, Bank of Maharashtra.
