SHANGHAI, CHINA, 22-23 APRIL 2010 – During the period of 2009 till 2016, China's urban transportation system will receive an injection of 52.84 billion RMB. Through new construction, expansion and the implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems, China's major cities aim at upgrading the safety, efficiency and sustainability of their transportation networks.

Noppen's 2nd Annual Integrated Urban Transportation Network Congress 2010, was co-organized by the Shanghai Municipal & Highway Engineering Trade Association which seeks to establish communication between its members, the government and society, and to develop the prosperity of the municipal engineering and construction industry. At the 2nd Annual Integrated Urban Transportation Network Congress, which took place on the 22-23 April in Shanghai, China over 80 major construction groups of city railway, subway, tunnels, roads and bridges; engineering companies; top design institutes; and municipal project owners/operators across China came together to discuss the development of the most advanced technology and solutions.

Keynote speakers at the congress were Guo Wenlong, Director, Comprehensive Transportation Institute, NDRC who spoke on national transportation development and planning, the most up-to-date policies and current developments from the NDRC; and Wang Feiyue, Vice Director, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences who presented on parallel management and control methods for Intelligent Transportation Systems. He spoke from both philosophical and theoretical viewpoints to help the audience gain a deeper understanding about urban transportation. Another influential speaker was Daniel Lai, Chief Information Officer, Mass Transit Railway Corporation who presented on how to deliver value and excellent service through best practice and IT solutions. As a true industry leader in subway IT construction his presentation was one of the most revered by attendees.

There were many noteworthy presentations throughout the two day event including James Huang, IT Head, Beijing MTR Corporation Limited who gave a speech on the promotion of IT in rail transit operation and management and from West Nippon Expressway Company Ltd in Japan, Masashi Iwamoto, Deputy Director, Environment Department, Technical Development Bureau, and Yuji Endoh, Vice Chief of Management Part & Planning Division, gave a joint presentation on ETC's attempts to facilitate remote operation. Their experience sharing, for example of the new interactive TV Intercom, was very motivating and dynamic. It was noted that there was great interaction between the speakers and the audience. Shanghai No.1 Construction Co., Ltd stated "I am very glad to participate in this event, which gave me further awareness of our industry and I learned best practices from other companies therefore building confidence in my own company's knowledge."

Other highlights included an overview of access management techniques and its impact on traffic safety by Lu Jian, Director, Jiaotong University Transportation Research Center and the presentation by Yan Peng, China Representative, Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities Center on the integration of freight in urban transportation, with focus on the lessons learned from Guangzhou Green Trucks Pilot Project. Li Xia, Standing Vice President and Secretary-General, Associate Researcher, Intelligent Transport System Association of Shenzhen presented on effective ITS practices and ITS in Shenzhen. Li Xia stated the conference was "very well organized! It is my great honor to attend this event." Other comments from attendees include "The presentations from the speakers broadened my thinking and professional knowledge. The event was very meaningful!" Shanghai No.1 Construction Co., Ltd.
