SANYA, CHINA, 21-22 APRIL 2011 – China is taking bold steps to expand and upgrade its airport infrastructure to keep pace with the demands of its growing economy. Air passenger traffic in China witnessed double-digit growth in the early years of the present decade. With this influx of passengers, China is currently adding to its network capacity through new airport construction, airport upgrading and expansion.
Supported by Sanya Phoenix International Airport, the 6th Annual China Airport Summit took place on the 21-22 April 2011 in Sanya, China. With over 140 attendees, the event featured the most prominent industry leaders and government officials from across the globe who provided informative and inspiring discussions, tackled the best solutions to problems addressing airports with top experts and divulged new strategies and technologies that can be taken away and applied to individual airports across the world.
On day one Mr. Wang Zhi, Former Director General, Planning Department, CAAC gave a keynote speech on the current development of Chinese airports, stressing the opportunities and challenges of airports expansion in the face of globalization. Mr. Wang was also the Chairman of the conference on day one. Mr. Lu Jianheng, Director, Planning Department, Civil Aviation Administration of China had just attended the CAAC meeting on the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". He took this opportunity to give a very detailed introduction to National Civil Airport Development in the Plan. The delegates got to learn about the ambitious airport development projects across China for the next five years. Mr. He Yuncheng, Chief Director of the Aviation Technology Department and Head of PBN Design, China Academy of Civil Aviation Science and Technology introduced China's PBN technology, a newly developed flight control technology that is used to ensure flight safety. This technology was independently developed by Mr. He Yuncheng's team and greatly improves flight safety in many small airports. Mr. Y. G. Lee, Executive Vice President, Incheon International Airport Corporation gave a key speech on growth by innovation and cooperation, introducing the exceptional development of Incheon International Airport. This is the second time Mr. Lee joins Noppen's China Airport Summit series. In 2010, Mr. Lee gave a key speech at the Kunming summit, in which he met with many airport CEOs. After the event, Mr. Lee started cooperation with a group of major China airports. He expects to meet and develop closer relationships with more Chinese airports through this year's event. Prominent speakers also included Hans Mitterlechner, Head of Aviation Business Development, Sydney Airport Corporation Limited who introduced the value chain of airport business and shared with the audience how to maximize the attractiveness of airports to passengers. Hans was noted as being an excellent speaker and the presentation was well prepared. In addition to introducing Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, which is the third largest airport location in Germany, Mr. Marjan Schoeke, Director Airline Marketing, Berlin Airports, took this opportunity to network with major Chinese airports, with an expectation to develop partnerships in the near future. The most popular presentation at the event was by Dong Lijia, Vice President, Junyao Airlines. Mr. Dong has worked in the airline industry for more than 20 years and is one of the most experienced Vice Presidents in the airline industry. He presented an excellent introduction to the relationship between airports and airlines and gave suggestions on how to improve cooperation in order to deliver better and safer services to passengers. "Very informative, well-organized event" Losberger Shanghai Co Ltd In addition, Ms. Cheng Fang, Deputy General Manager and Party Secretary of Commercial Division, Shanghai Hong Kong Airport Management Co Ltd presented on the commercial development of Hongqiao International Airport and explained how Hongkong Airport and Shanghai Airport work closely to manage one of China's best airports—Hongqiao International Airport. Li Yiming, Marketing Manager, Beijing Capital International Airport Co Ltd analyzed how an airport can maximize commercial revenue (non-aeronautical revenue) through state-of-art design and operation. His speech was one of the most detail-driven presentations at the event.
There were many technology updates revealed at the event. Ni Yunru, Senior Lighting Designer, Philips China Investment Co. Ltd. Presented on a "New Era in Airport Lighting"; Chi Xuejiao from LG introduced LG solutions for the airport industry and Max Chin, Director, Honeywell Environmental and Combustion Controls, Asia Pacific discussed safe, intelligent and energy efficient Honeywell airport solutions. A really talented speaker, he gave an introduction to the three Business Units of Honeywell and how Honeywell could help airports run safer, more intelligently and more energy efficiently. From ABB, Jack Lai made a very technical presentation on power distribution safety and energy saving solutions for airports that attracted airport experts' attention. Other notable speakers included Yuan Zhong, Sales Director, Verint Systems Inc who presented on actionable intelligence for your command, control, & communication center; and Kenneth Bell, Executive Director, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited shared with the audience his expertise of managing the air cargo terminal in one of the best airports in the world—Hong Kong Airport. Presentations also came from Sanya Phoenix International Airport Co Ltd, Beijing Capital Airlines Co Ltd (Deer Jet) and Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH.
